Mai Miyake

The self-taught artist Mai Miyake started creating works full time in 2001. She has participated in solo and group exhibitions as well as conducted workshops at renowned institutions and galleries such as Mori Art Museum (Tokyo) and Art Gallery at Art Tower Mito (Ibaraki), Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art (Shanghai). Contracted works include art work for Maison Hermès (Ginza, Tokyo).Miyake's artworks are rooted in the original Japanese sensibility that is often forgotten by contemporary people, yet they are not limited in their scope to the realms of traditional art. They translate the wit and esprit of the past into the language of the present.
Recently the artist published her 3rd book from Hatorishoten and also was featured in "Nouvelle Garde de l'Art contemporain japonais", "Le Lézard Noir", "See/Saw:Connections Between Japanese Art Then and Now" , Chronicle Books,"THE POWER OF JAPANESE CONTEMPORARY ART", Ascii Media Works and continues to attract critical acclaim in media.

STATEMENT

Whenever I am working on a piece, I feel like I am making something that cannot be touched using our physical existence or an object as medium, and trying to create a work in order to visualise the invisible. I am also fascinated by the things that cannot be touched by hand, things that cannot be visualized, as well as creating or nullifying bodies or objects.
Therefore, instead of the things you can see or touch, I have always had an interest in the emptiness that did not seem to exist. Although it feels like there is nothing, as if there really is nothing, when you strain your eyes, uncountable things become visible. As in Japanese paintings, the main feature is not in the part filled with strokes, but the part where it is not. Just like a human heart or a house, it absorbs most things especially when it is empty, and tries to possess it.
